House of Wax
|
IMDB rating: 6.90 Plot: A sculptor of wax figures for a museum is horrified when his partner proposes setting fire to the unpopular museum in order to collect the insurance money. As the wax figures melt amid the blaze, the two men have a fight. The sculptor is knocked out in the scuffle and left to “perish” among the flames. He resurfaces many years later for the launch of his own wax museum. The opening coincides with the sudden disappearance of some dead bodies from the city morgue. His assistant begins to suspect his boss of foul play, especially after the deranged wizard of wax begins eyeing his assistant’s lovely girlfriend’s friend as a model for a waxed figure of Marie Antoinette. |

How do I clean wicked dirty and/or turn of the century wood floors?
I just bought a house that was neglected for 3 years. It has two different types of wood floors. The frist type is newer Bella wood that you see at the big chain stores. It’s strait up grimy dude. I first sweapt it, then did a quick glaze mob. After that, I’ve been literally getting on my hands and knees with a scrubber. I’d then attempt to mop up the nastiest soap suds ever with your run of the mill rectangle pad house mop. From there, I’d wipe the residual wetness down with a towel. The next step consisted of ripping up some old t-shirts and appling furnature grade bees wax to the floor. I let it dry for 20 minutes then wiped it up. Can anyone say elbow grease? That exact process took me three hours to produce a 4′X10′ area. I must say, the resluts are flippin spectacular. Until of coarse, you walk on it. Because it seems bees wax may be a little too thick. At first, you’re able to see your footprints. Is this process overkill? Is bees wax too much? Will the scrubber damage anything? Is there a quicker way? Pine Sol did nothing when I tried it. I’m sure it will work eventually.
The second wood floor turned 100 years old about a week ago. It’s 2" thick oak and the planks are spaced an 1/8" apart. Serious stuff. But some fool before me painted them grey of all colors. The painted has worn all of the way through in some areas. I haven’t even attempted to clean this floor yet. There is no polyurathaine or wax at all on this floor. Does anyone have any tips? My back will appreciate it. I worry about water sepage in the cracks.
Please excuse the spelling errors. I’m a math guy.
For the oak floors I wouldn’t even mess with chemicals/cleaners. Test out an area of the floor with 80 grit sand paper, if the paint comes off pretty easily I would just go to your local hardware store rent a rotary style sander and work the whole thing over (use 70-80 grit sand paper and keep moving, worst thing you can do is let a sander sit in one place too long as it will create a "pit" in the floor). After you get the paint/crap off the floor run over the whole thing with a 120 grit paper and then coat with polyurathane.
I like minwax clear poly, thats what i used in my house, 5 years later the floors still look as good as the day I finished them.
Before you do anything though I would get a testing kit to make sure it’s not leaded paint! If it is make sure to wear a mask and get one of the full body suits to keep that crap off of you.

Bella wood flooring should not have the bees wax, but the oak planks can. Go to your local hardware store and find something to remove the bees wax. The are a number of items I have used on my floors, the one that I like best is made by ZEP, hardwood and laminate floor cleaner. There is a product called Rejuvenate that cleans grease build up off kitchen cabinets. I used it on a rental that had smokers living in it and it worked well. Good Luck and a bit of advice to save your back, do small sections and rest in between.

The best treatment is to Hire a Floor Sander, and then varnish the clean wood after,
