who is the greatest mma fighter of all time?
im tired of people saying oh look at brock oh fedor this fedor that pj benn destroyed sanchez he must be the best anderson silva this anderson silva that lyoto bla bla let me ask how many people here are pro mma fighters that watch tapes of fighters for hours to study them
i would have to ask a real mma fighter who they consider the best fighter in ufc history or mma to be.
gsp was asked this and he said roce gracie and matt hughes. if anyone else here is a pro mma fighter give me your opinions im not giving mine cause i am not a pro fighter im just a fan
This will always be a matter of opinion for all sorts of people.
The same as saying who was the best boxer of all time?
This will only grow with MMA’s growth as a sport.
And it would also depend on what your idea as far as qualifications goes.
For example in boxing, most people would agree to something such as: Which Heavyweight boxer had the greatest footwork of a heavyweight of all time? Obviously that would be Mohammed Ali.
However, if you based GOAT on records.. then there are guys who have won over 100 more fights than Ali, Tyson, or Marciano, etc.
Same goes with MMA.
What are you looking at: Record, who the person has fought, win/loss ratio, most well rounded game?
Again it would be hard.
To me, Fedor is the most dangerous MMA fighter that is out there right now period. He can be behind and beat you out of the blue, he can overwhelm guys MUCH bigger than him, he can knock guys out, he can submit guys, he is one of the most dangerous people of all time to have in your guard. Fedor has beaten guys ranked in the top 5 of his division at the time of fighting them, in fact he has beaten more ranked fighters than anyone else out there.
GSP is what BJ Penn could be. GSP has amazing natural talent, and combines that with incredible hard work. He is a stud and a half, but if you compared him to Fedor, both fighting and record wise.. where is GSP better?
Fedor has one fluke loss to a cut.
GSP has been knocked out and submitted.
Fedor has better submission skills, more submission wins and a variety of submissions.
Fedor has finished more opponents.
GSP is a better wrestler…
BJ Penn is literally one of those guys that insiders always feel compelled to include, but the truth is, he is only truly good inside his own division (which isn’t that stacked) and basically has been known to not apply himself. But he has absolutely phenomenal ability and talent, which always makes him highly thought of. But compare his record, his game, to Fedor, who has fought guys much bigger than him, never gasses out, and again has come back even when he is in trouble and clearly Fedor is the better fighter not just in skill in ability, but in the attitude and humility of a champion.
There is a reason guys say Fedor is the GOAT at this point, because he has beaten all comers. He has done so in a variety of ways, and beaten guys who at that point were considered top 5 HW.
I mean there are guys out there that are still amazing, so it would be truly hard to say it.
Royce did it at a time with less rules, and having to fight back to back. Mind you the competetion was much weaker, and Royce was one dimensional. But that has to tell you something.
Randy Couture is the ultimate underdog winner, and the fact he has accomplished titles in two different weight divisions, multiple times is pretty impressive.
Matt Hughes dominated for a while… hard to count him out.
Kazushi Sakuraba is a legend in the sport, one of the first guys to truly showcase how good wrestling can beat BJJ.
Rickson Gracie is also someone to look to, while his record may be exagerrated, he was undefeated in all the precursor to MMA style fights in Japan in Brasil.
All that aside, I say Fedor beats all of the above at the height of their careers, and does so without fanfare, smack talking, steroids, cheating accusations, or hubris.
The dude has a chin, explosive power, and is literally a threat no matter what position he is in period. On your feet he can knock you out, tie him up he can throw you, on his back he can submit you, in your guard he can pound you out, slam him on his head and and he will armbar you.
He is one of the few guys out there who can knock you out while backpedalling.
Fedor at this point is the GOAT to me, simply because of the length of time he has been dominant.
Guys are saying Fedor has to fight so and so… despite the fact that Fedor was on the top before so and so was even in the picture, now that so and so has come up, it’s Fedor who has to prove himself? Please.
That is just my opinion.

i am not a pro fighter but have black belts in 2 styles and have boxed for 16 years. i don’t think just because someone is a fighter, their opinion necessarily holds more weight than a fan, unless that particular fighter has fought all the great mma fighters in history. that being said, matt hughes did put together a great string of victories, royce is a legend, i love couture but he has too many losses, and anderson and gsp have to be considered if they keep winning, even though they also have losses.

Honestly, we can’t say of all time because time isn’t over yet. Probably in the last few years I would say Anderson Silva or GSP. They have good technique and use various styles in their fighting. I also give them respect because they are true martial artists; their modest.

The Pound for Pound greatest Mixed Martial Artist of all time is Georges St. Pierre. To be the greatest mixed martial artist one must be great at several types of martial arts. Georges has terrific Stand-up, unmatched wrestling, and Great submissions. Every time he has lost he has learned from it and greatly improved his skills. He spends his time training at several gyms. Instead of training at an MMA gym he trains at a gym for boxing, a gym with olympic wrestlers etc. Anderson Silva may be great but he is a great striker and a good ground fighter not a great ground fighter. Fedor hasn’t been properly tested to the top of his skill
Georges St. Pierre without a doubt

Fedor - He’s done what nobody else has come close to doing. Beat top competition in dramatic fashion for years. When was the last time he didn’t finish a fight? There’s your answer.
